Fremont DMV — 4287 Central Ave, Fremont
Fremont is the busiest DMV field office east of the bay and serves the entire Tri-City area (Fremont, Newark, Union City) plus much of Hayward and Milpitas. The lot is large but fills early. The surrounding streets are wide and well-maintained, and the parallel-parking exercise uses a generous 22-foot stall.
Best for: Tri-City residents, anxious first-time drivers, and anyone who wants a calm test environment.
San Jose DMV — 111 W Alma Ave, San Jose
The San Jose DMV is the busiest field office in the South Bay and serves a massive catchment that includes San Jose, Cupertino, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Milpitas. The surrounding area features heavier urban traffic, more lane-change opportunities, and busier signal sequences than the East Bay offices.
Best for: confident drivers who have trained in real traffic and want a test that mirrors daily driving in the South Bay.
Hayward DMV — 150 Jackson St, Hayward
Hayward sits on a hill, and the surrounding terrain reflects that. Expect more uphill stops and downhill controlled descents than at other Bay Area DMV offices. Examiners pay special attention to use of the brake on downhill segments and proper hill-start technique.
Best for: confident drivers who have practiced hill driving. Plan extra time on hill starts if you have not before — the terrain is more demanding than Fremont or Redwood City.
Redwood City DMV — 300 Brewster Ave, Redwood City
Redwood City serves the Peninsula — Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City, parts of San Mateo. The parking lot is the smallest of the four, but the surrounding area is relatively gentle and largely residential. The parallel-parking stall is wide.
Best for: Peninsula residents and adult learners on a short training arc.
How CalPro tailors prep to each office
We pick up near your DMV office on test day so your final lesson before the appointment feels like normal practice — you arrive warmed up and on familiar terms with the car.
When students ask which DMV they should test at, I usually recommend the one closest to where they live and lesson. Familiarity matters. Driving in an area you have driven in for hours is a meaningfully different experience than driving in unfamiliar territory with an examiner in the seat next to you.
